HISTORY (ORIGINAL VEHICLE)
The life of this vehicle began as a completely standard production 300 SL Roadster. It was only later that it was repainted in dark brown and fitted with various motorsport-inspired accessories. In addition, the engine received a performance upgrade that was particularly noticeable in its distinctive sound. However, the car never achieved any significant success in competitive motorsport events. By the time it was transformed into its racing guise, too many years had already passed and the vehicle had begun to show its age.
The great finale came in 2007: accompanied by driver Jochen Mass and co-driver Herbert Völker, the SL embarked on a journey around the globe to participate in a number of prestigious classic car events. The schedule included renowned gatherings such as the Ennstal-Classic in Austria, a spectacular three-day rally held on specially closed Alpine roads.
On the other side of the world, the car appeared at the Adelaide Classic in Australia before crossing the Atlantic once again to take part in the Colorado Grand, a charitable event dedicated to raising funds for the local region. Beneficiaries include community organizations, rural communities, scholarship programs, medical facilities, and air rescue services. The figures speak for themselves: the event regularly raises more than USD 800,000 per year, and since 1989 the organizers have distributed a total of over USD 11 million in charitable contributions.
None of these events focused on outright competition or racing. Instead, they were intended as unique showcases for spectators and fellow participants alike. It is also likely that the SL’s status as a one-of-a-kind automobile, and its considerable value, played a role, as no one wished to risk damaging such an important vehicle in the heat of competition. In the years that followed, the car made occasional appearances at classic car events, where it continued to attract the admiration of enthusiasts.
