It almost didn’t work out at all: originally a production version of the 300 SL was not
\nplanned at Daimler-Benz, but the re-entry into racing with the predecessor vehicle was
\nunexpectedly successful.<\/p>\n
The rest was contributed by the then importer for the USA, Max Hoffman. He had
\nbeen calling for a small and a larger, two-seater sports car from Mercedes for some
\ntime. As successful as the 300 SL in particular was, Hoffman was dissatisfied. He was
\nthe driving force behind providing the gullwing with a more comfortable successor,
\nfrom 1957 production was switched to the W 198 II roadster, the sales designation
\n300 SL was retained; so the car was built a total of 1858 times until 1963.<\/p>\n
Not only was the 300 SL considered the fastest production sports car in its time, it also
\nboasted numerous automotive innovations. For the first time, brake power support
\nwas offered for the drum brakes, later the switch was made to standard disc brakes
\non all four wheels. Gasoline direct injection was installed in a production vehicle for
\nthe first time and the dry sump lubrication also comes directly from racing. For the
\nfirst time in a Mercedes passenger car, seat belts can be ordered as an optional extra.<\/p>\n
We present you the model of the 300 SL Roadster in this version with a removable
\nhard top. This was available for the roadster as an optional extra for an extra charge
\nand turned the folding roof car into a full-fledged coup\u00e9. As in the original, the hard
\ntop or the soft top compartment lid can be mounted on the model.<\/p>\n
Your model is painted in the Mercedes-Benz colour 050 white \u2013 by far the most
\npopular colour for the 300 SL \u2013 almost every fifth vehicle was painted white, not
\ncounting snow white, pearl white, ivory and light ivory. The other side of the
\npopularity scale of the colors is even more blatant: 40 cars are unique colors, in the
\nentire production period only a single car was painted in the respective color.<\/p>\n
The model offers you numerous features, to name just a few: high-quality interior
\nlined with leather and chrome, folding seats, movable sun visors and an ashtray on
\nthe dashboard that can be opened. The hubcaps are removable and the door handles
